The National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution plans to repatriate the following to the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
The skeletal remains of at least five individuals were obtained from a Chippewa burial ground on Mackinac Island, Mich., between 1882 and 1884 and sent to the Army Medical Museum in Washington, D.C., in 1884. They were transferred to the Smithsonian Institution from the Army Medical Museum in 1904.
After consultation with the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and a review of the available evidence, the remains have been found to be culturally affiliated to the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The remains will be jointly repatriated to both the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
