The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Natural Resources Division announced April 20, 2026, that the oil spill at the McKay Bay boat launch has largely been contained. Oil booms have been deployed to prevent the spill from migrating further into sensitive wetlands, and staff continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis.

Sault Tribe Natural Resources Division was notified of a potential spill at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 16. Staff immediately responded by contacting local and tribal law enforcement and coordinating with the Coast Guard on containment and cleanup efforts.

An investigation into the cause of the spill is ongoing. The boat launch remains closed until further notice, and the public is asked to stay away from the area.
