Fall Fasting Camp and the fall Women’s Fast for Mother Earth will take place Sept. 30 through Oct. 4 this fall. Led by the Sault Tribe Health Division’s Traditional Medicine Program, fasting camp is offered in the spring and fall each year at the Mary Murray Culture Camp on Sugar Island.
Sugar Island is located in the St. Mary’s River and is a township of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
The Women’s Fast for Mother Earth is a one-day fast from sunrise to sunset while praying for Mother Earth. This fall, it will take place on Oct. 3.
This fast was introduced by the late Adam Lussier as a way of helping the Earth in the face of all those things that harm it, such as pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction. At sunset when the fast is over, organizers will hold a sweat lodge and feast for the fasters.
During the fasting camp beginning Sept. 30, participants will fast for one to four days as determined by the traditional healer. Some are experienced fasters while others are beginners.
Participants must be 18 or older unless accompanied by an adult. Organizers ask that ladies remember moontime teachings.
