The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Natural Resources Division (NRD) is proud to welcome the community to its new facility at 199 W. 3 Mile Road in Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday, Sept. 8 beginning at noon.
The Gidayaangwaami’idimin Ezhi-inawendiyang (Natural Resource Division) building is one of the newest Sault Tribe facilities and will house all the NRD programs. This includes Fisheries, Wildlife, Environmental, Consortium for Cooperative Ecological Resilience, and the NRD administrative team. The new facilities represent years of hard work, planning, and gracious support from Sault Tribe leadership.
To mark the occasion, there will be an invocation followed by remarks from the Sault Tribe chairman when the event begins at noon. At 12:30 p.m., the community is invited to a lunch served at the new facility. Guests are encouraged to visit with NRD staff and tour the new buildings.
At 1:30 p.m., a new series of quarterly community presentations and coffee hour open to the Sault Tribe community will commence led by the Fisheries and Wildlife Programs. Those unable to attend the new series in person can attend via Zoom or watch the presentations later on Facebook or YouTube.
“The last year has been one of ongoing change and growth for the Natural Resources Division,” said NRD Director Danielle Fegan. “Moving into our new long-term home has definitely been one of the highlights. We’re excited to welcome community members for the first of what we hope will be many events.”
Staff from the Fisheries Program will talk about NRD’s fish stocking program, including its longstanding walleye rearing efforts and its whitefish restoration efforts. Katie Schultz and Wildlife Program staff will then speak on the NRD’s manoomin (wild rice) restoration work, including the 2026 seeding effort and ongoing invasive species removal across restoration sites. They will also highlight successes from the Black Tern and mudpuppy project as well as offer an overall look at the field season as it wraps up.
Two new NRD buildings are located at 199 W. 3 Mile Road. NRD is extremely grateful to have all its programs together and working in a shared space for the first time in the division’s history. NRD looks forward to hosting many more events as the new facility as well as continuing its new quarterly community presentations with the next presentation set to feature the Environmental Program and the Consortium for Cooperative Ecological Resilience.
