Welcome to Chi Mukwa Community Recreation Center (Big Bear Arena), home of the Sault High Blue Devils hockey team, Summer Recreation Program, Champion Force Cheerleading, The Academy of Performing Arts, AJ's Driving School and the Soo Michigan Hockey Association.

Located in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.—and just across the International Bridge from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario—this establishment is enjoyed by Canadians as well as those from the U.S.

Big Bear is owned and operated by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and was opened September 27, 1996. This state-of-the-art recreational facility was named “Chi Mukwa,” which is Ojibwe for “Big Bear.” The 150,000-square-foot indoor space is one of Northern Michigan’s largest sports and fitness venues. Big Bear is the only ice arena in the Upper Peninsula equipped with two ice rinks under one roof. In addition, Big Bear houses a Pro Shop, Concessions Stand, Sault Tribe Physical Therapy and Sault Tribe Education Department.

The recreational facility also houses the All-In-One Fitness Club, a tribally-operated fitness center. The largest fitness center in the city. Features Hammer Strength, Magnum and Precor strength training equipment and Olympic lifting platform along with plenty of free weights and floor exercise area. The cardiovascular area includes Cybex and Precor steppers, elliptical machines and treadmills.

Along with the facility’s many features, Big Bear hosts a Pro Shop, cultural events, sporting events, youth programs, fitness classes and social events.
