Sault Tribe Ishkode Gathering

Sault Tribe Ishkode Gathering Sept. 14

There will be a Sault Tribe Ishkode (Fire) community gathering in Raco on Saturday, Sept. 14, at noon. This gathering is part of Natural Resources' work revitalizing ishkode // prescribed fire on the Hiawatha National Forest.

Sault Tribe has been collaborating with the Hiawatha National Forest on wildlife, forestry, and fire for over a decade - Natural Resources has been working to reintroduce Anishinaabe fire to the land, plants, wildlife, and broader ecological community. This event will bring community members, tribal staff, and Forest Service staff together at Betchler Marsh, where prescribed fires are planned.
• Pipe ceremony, feast, and giveaway
• Picking medicines afterward (e.g. wintergreen, Labrador tea)
• Family-friendly event!
• A casino bus will be leaving from the Niigaanagiizhik Building at 11-11:15 a.m. and returning mid-to late-afternoon that day. Folks can also caravan from the Niigaanagiizhik Building.
• For folks coming from the south and west, Natural Resources can share directions to the site (from M-28, head south on Dick Road, aka USFS Road 3139, and you'll see the cars).
A Facebook event will be created soon, with more information and updates here: https://www.facebook.com/SeventhGenerationPrinciple
