FRIDAY, JUNE 28:
Soo Locks Engineers day, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Soo Locks Park, 329 W. Portage Ave.
It’s the event that started it all – the one day when you can walk across the mighty Soo Locks’ walls and explore the buildings and special exhibits open only on this day.
Engineer’s Day festivities are held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The gates are open to allow visitors to explore on their own self-guided tours across the locks and into historically important structures (Davis building and the administration building) used solely for the work of one of the world’s busiest lock systems.
The Cloverland Electric Cooperative Hydroelectric Plant open house is canceled in 2019 due to the new construction of the Lake Superior State University’s Center for Freshwater Research and Education.
Arts, crafts and family fun fair, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., city hall, 225 E. Portage Ave.
Want to take home a souvenir, snack on locally-made goodies, or add a new piece to your art collection? There’s something for everyone at this outdoor fair.
With over 40 high-quality arts and crafts vendors, favorite foods, and kids’ activities from bouncy houses and balloons to intriguing adventures, this should be a stop on your Engineers Day adventure. Count on local maple syrup items, traditional and creative handheld meals, assorted roasted nuts and familiar hot and cold dishes. Awesome artistic media will include photography, oil paintings, charcoal drawings, hand-woven and other fabric items, furniture, glasswork, beadwork and jewelry.
U.S. Coast Guard Station open house, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., United States Coast Guard Station, 337 E. Water Street
Explore the USCG station on Water Street, a Canadian constable carrier and the State of Michigan training ship.
A rescue demonstration takes place at 10 a.m. at the station along with a viewing of a USCG helicopter.
Come hang out with Coastie the Tugboat, Chief Petty "Paw-fficer" Onyx and PFD Panda and talk about the importance of water safety.
5th Annual Slashin’ Ashmun, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Far more than a car show and more than just cruising the town, this event is a throwback to the 1970s when the young adults would cruise the circuit through the downtown of Sault Ste. Marie to see who’s out. This two-hour block is an opportunity for the young at heart to relive their youth and have a fantastic time. Join over 200 vehicles as they drive up and down Ashmun Street. There is no cost to participate. Just show up and merge into the slow-moving line of cars and cruise the streets of downtown Sault Ste. Marie!
SATURDAY, JUNE 29:
International Bridge Walk, 9:30 a.m., James Norris Physical Education Center, 650 W Easterday Ave. Cost: $5 per person for return bus ride
Lace up your sneakers and get ready to walk a Michigan landmark. The annual International Bridge Walk takes an easy pace and provides spectacular views of the twin Saults, the St. Marys River rapids and the Soo Locks.
Young and old, physically fit and fitness challenged, all enjoy the fantastic views and the resulting pictures that will last a lifetime. Best of all, there’s no admission fee, no long waits and no sweltering heat to contend with, since the walk steps off at 9:30 a.m. Bicycles are welcomed to attend as well. Bikes will start the parade at 9:30 a.m. and walkers will follow.
Walkers will need proper ID to cross the border, however bike riders do not as they will NOT enter Canada.
