The USDA Food Distribution Program provides nutritional foods to qualified low-income individuals and families. It is available to enrolled members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians or other Federally Recognized Tribe residing within the 15 county service area of: Chippewa, Mackinac, Luce, Alger, Benzie, Marquette, Schoolcraft, Delta, Emmet, Cheboygan, Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim, Charlevoix, and Manistee.

USDA staff members certify and distribute food at a central warehouse located in the Sault and repeat the process at eight tailgate sites. A Nutrition Educator is also available to assist with any nutrition questions you may have. The application process to receive these benefits can take up to seven business days.

In order to process your application, we will need copies of the following:

  • Sault Tribe membership card or other federally recognized tribe
  • Proof of income for the past month for all members of the household. You are unable to receive USDA commodities if you have received food stamps in the same month.
  • All savings accounts

We will be unable to process your application without this information.
