Mission StatementThis mission of the Elder Services Division is to "provide high quality In-Home; Access; and Community Based Services for tribal elders and their spouses to assure maximum health and independence." Services and ProgramsIn-Home Services (Homecare)Personal CareProvision of in-home assistance with activities of daily living (ADL) for an individual including assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transferring, eating and ambulation. Respite CareProvision of companionship, supervision and/or assistance with activities of daily living for mentally or physically disabled and frail elderly persons in the absence of the primary caregiver(s). HomemakingPerformance of routine household tasks to maintain an adequate living environment for older individuals with functional limitations. Allowable homemaking tasks are limited to the following: laundry; meal preparation; shopping for necessities, including groceries; light housekeeping tasks (dusting, vacuuming, mopping floors, cleaning bathroom and kitchen, making beds, maintaining safe environment); and observing, reporting, and recording any change in client's condition and home environment. Medication DeliveryDelivery of medication to elders within city limits. Access ServicesNon-Emergency Medical TransportProvision of transportation to assist individuals who, for a variety of factors, are unable to use conventional means of transportation to reach needed services, or require such assistance for reasons of personal security or protection. Outreach & AdvocacyIdentifies and contacts isolated older persons and/or older persons in greatest social and economic need who may need assistance in gaining access to appropriate services and/or be eligible to receive available public benefits provided through federal, state, local and tribal governments. Assist individuals to access desired public benefits. Americorp VistaVolunteer In Service To America program provides participants opportunity to work with tribal elders under the auspices of the Nation Society for American Indian Aged (NSAIE) Participants receive a living allowance and educational benefit if eligible. Elder Times NewsletterA Bi-monthly newsletter published with submissions from elders to promote good mental health initiatives for other tribal elders. Community ServicesCongregate Meal ProgramEstablished meal sites where elders can gather to receive a nutritious noon time meal and to socialize with other elders. The congregate meal program is for Sault Tribe elders and their spouse's age 60 and over. Home Delivered Meal ProgramHome Delivered meals provided to homebound elder's age 60 and over. Eligibility for home delivered meals is determined by assessment. Referrals are also used to determine eligibility. Meals are delivered within city limits of meal sites. Elder Health Sufficiency FundThis fund provides payment of various services for duly enrolled tribal members age 60+ living in the United States. This fund provides for dentures, eyeglasses and durable medical equipment as deemed "Medically Necessary" by a physician and complies with Medicare Standards. Elders must receive services from the Sault Tribe Health Facilities for dental and optical care. Please click on our directory link for locations and contact information.
