Election Announcement

The Election Committee would like to inform the membership that the primary ballots were brought to the Post Office on Thursday, April 29. Membership should expect their primary ballots this week. Due to new regulations combined with new staff at the Post Office, you may notice a small delay in receiving your ballot. The Election Committee will be conducting the primary count on May 20 at Kewadin Casino's Grand Ballroom. SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - A regular meeting of the Sault Tribe Board of Directors will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at the Kewadin Casino and Convention Center in Sault Ste. Marie beginning at 6 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by “Matters Raised by the Membership” from 5 to 6 p.m.

Resolutions to be considered are: Culture Camp Budget Modification; STAY Grant Budget Modification; Gaming Commission Budget Modification and Native American Law Contract.

Water usage fees, license plates and 501c(3) will be discussed under New Business.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - A regular meeting of the Sault Tribe Board of Directors will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at the Kewadin Casino and Convention Center in Sault Ste. Marie beginning at 6 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by “Matters Raised by the Membership” from 5 to 6 p.m.

A “Battle of the Boards” presentation will be made.

Resolutions to be considered are: Partial Waiver; Lease Cancellation; Land Lease; Tribal Consultation Team; USDA Budget Modification; Approving Contract for Abbott, Nicholson; Approving Contract for Native American Law; Approving Contract for Frost Brown; Approving Contract for Plunkett Cooney; Approving Contract for Bruce Greene; 2010 Head Start Early Head Start COLA; Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation; BIA Deputy Agreement; Native Employment Works Program; Native Youth and Culture Fund Grant; Amending Resolution 2010-33: Health Center Employee Policies; Acceptance of Northern Kewadin Casinos Audit.

Committee Actions and Post Chief of Police Position will be discussed under New Business.

Sault Tribe official candidates list

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Sault Tribe Election Committee has released the official candidate list for this year’s tribal board election.

The directors to be elected are as follows:

Unit 1 – two members
Unit 2 – one member
Unit 3 – one member
Unit 4 – one member
Unit 5 – one member

Board members with seats up for election are DJ Hoffman and Dennis McKelvie in Unit 1, Keith Massaway in Unit 3, Shirley Petosky in Unit 5 and, running unopposed, Denise Chase in Unit 4. Long time Board Member Bob LaPoint will not run in Unit 2 and his seat will see six candidates vying for the position.

Primary election day is set for May 20. Primary election ballots will be mailed to tribal members on April 29. A special edition of the Sault Tribe newspaper Win Awenen Nisitotung is planned for May 7 with profiles and photos of all candidates in both print and online editions.

Following the primary election, general election ballots will be mailed to voters on June 3, with the official vote count taking place June 24.

The following candidates for the 2010 primary election are listed in alphabetical order with the incumbents’ names in italics.

Unit 1 — Wayne Goetz, DJ Hoffman, Dierdrie J. Malloy, Dennis McKelvie, Debra-Ann Pine and Barbara Smutek
Unit 2 — William Baker, Lisa Burnside, James Kelley, Duncan MacArthur, Margaret Rounds and Catherine Tolan-Hollowell
Unit 3 — Douglas Goudreau, Keith Massaway, Wayne Pemble
Unit 4 — Denise Chase
Unit 5 — Joan Carr-Anderson, Charles Matson, Shirley Petosky and Boyd Synder

The term of all board members will be four years. Elections for board members from Unit 1, 2, 3 and 4, as well as the Chairperson will be held in 2012.

These luncheons will be hosted by the Michigan Commission for the Blind, also known as MCB, at the regular tribal luncheon locations. MCB staff members Ed Haines, Jim Unger, and Sherry Gordon will speak 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. (noon) about the commission’s no-fee services available to Michigan residents who are blind or visually impaired. Lunch will be served 12-1 p.m., and there will be hands-on demonstrations; 1-3 p.m. of adaptive equipment commonly used by people who are blind or visually impaired. Information about the Michigan Commission for the Blind will be distributed in alternative formats, such as large print and Braille.

All tribal members and guests are welcome to attend.
