About Us
The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Juvenile Detention Center is a 24-bed facility located in St. Ignace, Michigan which houses children and young adults age 12 – 17 who are awaiting their sentence from the courts. It is the only facility of its kind east of the Mississippi.
The purpose of youth facility is to help keep children out of prison and to guarantee them the rehabilitation services that are ordered close to their homes.
The facility is structured to work with the needs of the children and their families. Alternative Education classes will be available, as well as Social Services to increase and support family involvement.
The facility is licensed by the State of Michigan, and accepts children from anywhere in the country. It is available to other law enforcement agencies including Federal and State Law Enforcement, and other Tribal Governments. It will not only service the Upper Peninsula, but also a major portion of Northern Lower Michigan.
